The Kindness of Strangers: How a Person I Had Just Met Assisted Me Obtain the Job That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Since my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the canteen, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I my profession was, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a position with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The engineering student walked over to me and told me that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a graduate degree in global studies.

I never saw that student again and I don’t even know his name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in multiple respects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-assurance to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Moreover, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York paved the way for a role in Europe where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m always appreciative.
