New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such medications must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs report a intense return of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated behavioural management.
