European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
