England along with Wales Pitted Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by sporting legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales find themselves placed in an identical pool for the World Cup in 2027, promising a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This pairing recalls their memorable meeting in the pool stages of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Group Pairings

Ireland and Scotland also share a pool once again, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, Ireland claimed a 36-14 victory, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Portugal, both impressed as underdogs in the last World Cup, round out that same group.

Notably, the victors of these two groups are kept apart from defending champions and world number one South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the Springboks top their own group.

Knockout Ramifications

If the groups play out in line with the current world rankings, further leading contenders like New Zealand and France would remain separated from both the English and Ireland all the way to the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Argentina would be the remaining top-ranked nation on that half of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Fixture

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Group A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the event.

In other groups, holders the Springboks have drawn Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. The French team are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament expands to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will introduce a round of 16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of Pool F may be kept apart from some of the rugby's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six pool winners will face a third-placed side from the pool stages.
