A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
